A Recent Book Award Wrap Up (and I’m Back!)
I’ve fallen off a bit on blogging over the last 6 months, but am making a commitment to myself to start again in 2024! I’m starting with a few BIG blog posts, since not blogging for over 6 months certainly means I have a lot to talk about! Today, I’m looking at recent book awards from the second half of 2023, including some books you likely have heard of, and quite a few that you may have not encountered yet! Next week, I have a look at my reading year in 2023 (and looking forward to March, we have my favorite event of the spring coming up, the Tournament of…

Exploring Books, The Pride Edition: Transgender and Non-Binary Stories
Welcome to June! May has passed by way to fast for me, but I certainly am enjoying the longer days, the warmer evenings and dreaming about fun weekend adventures. With June being Pride month for the LBGTQ+ community, this year especially, with the trans community being so viciously targeted across the country, it feels especially important to highlight some books that help explain or process the trans and non-binary experience. Recent(ish) Award Winners: New Awards and Weird Books
I recently updated the Current Book Award Winners page of my website, which I try to do every few months (it’s been 2 years now…), and it was fun to see what has been getting the spotlight. Some I had read, some I had heard of, but many were new to me, which was fun! The page linked above looks at your standard mainstream book awards, but it also tracks book awards for specific formats, or that give awards for regional authors, genre book or authors and protagonists who have a typically underrepresented background, and you might have fun exploring some prizes that you didn’t know about! Today, I have…

August: diverse genre books (and slumps)
Eek, First of all, where has this summer gone!?! One minute it was June, and now I feel like I blinked and it was September. Honestly this month has been the most “splumpy” I have had this year (although I did get married and write my organization’s annual budget, so perhaps there is a reason for the slump. This month, I have what I consider to be a small success which is that the majority of my books were by BIPOC authors, which leads me to be give you a few recommendations of the diverse author variety, particularly in diverse genre fiction. One of the things I am working on…

OF/BY/FOR ALL: An interesting look at diversity and representation
Recently, I watched a fascinating talk, given by the director of a museum in California, which talked about her experience bringing representation and inclusivity to her museum space, and the huge benefits that this effort brought to the organization and the surrounding community. OF/BY/FOR ALL is a movement that came from her work that seeks to help organizations find ways of doing this themselves. It is a longer video, but I encourage you all to check this out! Have a great week! If you are getting this update as an email, make sure you click the link to visit my site and you will be able to watch the video…
