In Memorial: Magic School Bus and March

Yesterday, we lost two incredible authors who have inspired me in so many ways. Both Joanna Cole and John Lewis passed away, and today, my heart is heavy. John Lewis was a civil rights activist, congressmen and co-author of the powerful and beautiful graphic novel March and Joanna Cole was the author of the incredible Magic School Bus series.

March, which tells the story of John Lewis’s work as a civil rights advocate from his childhood and student life to the march in Selma, Alabama. I reviewed it a few years ago on my old blog HERE, and I highly recommend it for people of all ages.

John Lewis is a true American hero and I am thinking of him today. Thank you John Lewis for your unending devotion to this country!

If it tells you what the Magic School Bus meant to me as a child, I actually have a Mrs Frizzle dress in my stash (Space Frizzle of course).

Magic School Bus featured a wacky teacher, and a magic bus, and a crew of entertaining students who would shrink, grow and morph to explore all sorts of scientific processes firsthand, from the digestive system (poor Arnold) to the process of making honey, baking or going to space.

More recently, the newer Magic School Bus series has even covered my favorite pet subject, mycorrhizal fungi. These books are a part of my childhood, and I am so grateful for every scrap of adventure and fun they brought me.

For me and countless kids, the Magic School Bus was a seminal part of our childhood, and Joanna Cole will be missed. Thank you for educating me and so many other kids about the world around us!

It is a sad day today, but it is also such a great day to celebrate the lives of two incredibly talented authors.

My students used to call me Ms. Frizzle (based on my hair, glasses and, yeah, probably attitude). I considered that a high honor. Thanks for this remembrance of two greats. What a ride.
