A Holiday Reading Vacation

There is a strange time of year when the “best of” lists have come out, but we still have some time before we actually start the next year’s reading/watching/listening. It means I can blow my Spotify up with Christmas music, watch some of the TV shows that I haven’t gotten to yet, but I when it comes to reading, I don’t always know what to do with December, especially as there just are not a lot of books being released this time of year.

Some years, I use this time to “catch up”, to read the books I had meant to read and to finish books that I have been struggling to get to all year. Other years, I tend to treat it as a true break, and read old middle grade books, cozy murder mysteries and all the books that I sometimes feel don’t really count as “real” reading.

This year, I have fallen somewhere in between. I am reading a fun buzzy fantasy book that is one of the “best of the year” books this past year and enjoying some cozy Christmas murder mysteries.

One of the fun highlights for me this year has been re-reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I remember reading it when I was young, but I haven’t read it for so long that it felt new again! It was short, full of unexpected humor and generally excellent writing. It is also clearly meant to be read out loud, with amazing internal alliterations that make it so fun and entertaining to listen to!

Also, Sir Patrick Stewart has been reading excerpts every day over on Instagram, if you want to get a sense of what it sounds like out loud

What does your Christmas vacation reading look like?
